Laying out your Lines can be done either upwind or downwind. The upwind method is easiest and least complicated but it is good to be well versed in both methods in case you need to change your rigging habits for some reason like visiting a new beach with limited room. Upwind method is easier as the wind assists you by blowing the lines out in front of you when you are untangling your lines towards the kite.
Upwind lines - Start by standing adjacent to the leading edge and pay the lines out as you walk directly upwind of the kite. When fully unrolled, lay the bar down on the ground right side up. Some bars are coloured Red for Port (left) but a better way is to look at the bar and if it has any quick releases on harness lines or the bar itself, these should face up. Next is to separate the lines back to the kite keeping them all well apart to be sure they cannot be mistakenly hooked up wrong. Place a small handful of sand over each line end to stop the wind blowing them over each other, then walk the kite up and place it over the line ends so that they appear out behind the kite. Leave the centre lines running under the leading edge but pull the rear (outside) lines out clear of the side of the kite. Next attach the front lines (running under the leading edge) to the pigtails on the leading edge wingtip pigtails. Then connect the outside or rear lines to the back (steering) pigtails keeping them outside the kite. When you stand the kite up, the lines will be right. You should always check again before flight as should your launcher.
Downwind Lines - Start with your kite to the upwind half of the launch area, place it down. Start running the lines out downwind unwinding the bar from the trailing edge of the canopy directly downwind. Once the lines are laid out, place the bar down UPSIDE DOWN ie. with the quick releases facing down. Untangle the lines on your way back to the kite and again spread the lines apart placing a small handful of sand to keep the ends in position whilst you ready the other lines. Connect the front lines directly to the front pigtails on the leading edge of the kite and then connect the rear lines to the trailing edge pigtails. Pull the bar and tension the lines to make sure they are not crossed. Roll the kite over and walk the bar around in an arc to the edge of the wind window for launch but remember to turn the bar around to face the right way up when you are ready to launch, make sure you get a clear signal from the pilot and the launcher by giving an obvious "thumbs up" before launching.
