Self Launching a "Bow" or S.L.E. kite PDF Print Email

Self Launching a "Bow" or S.L.E. kite is easy and quite safe when you use the proper technique. Firstly setup the kite as per normal with the bar upwind.  Next, place your bar and lines at 45 degrees upwind from the kite, slightly more upwind than you would for a neutral position launch.  This should set your kite back deeper into the wind window by about 15 degrees.

Make sure the lines all come out clear of the back of the kite and then turn to go upwind to the bar which should be 45 degrees away from the wind direction.  Now, turn the kite from directly into the wind, to approximately 40 degrees away from the wind direction away from your bar and lines and place some sand on the downwind side of the canopy between the wingtip strut and the next strut inboard.  Dont use too much, just enough to hold the kite securely until you can get back and put your leash on.

Move quickly back to your bar and attach your leash FIRST and then the chicken loop.  Check the area is clear, then depower the bar fully and place one finger on the quick release just in case something goes wrong.  Now walk straight back away from the kite and tension the front lines, there is no need to hold the bar!  With tension, it will drag the kite around allowing the wind to fill the downwind trailing edge and will flick the sand off.  At this point the kite should roll onto it's side and be almost in the relaunch position.  You will need to keep tension on the bar and walk in an arc downwind until your kite is at neutral, then grab the bar and launch as normal.
