A surfboard can be used but please be aware it will get trashed. A surfboard was never designed to take the beatings and pressures that a dedicated kiteboard will endure. You can use an old surfboard if you like and have inserts put into the deck by a surfboard shaper so you can use footstraps. Modern kiteboard designs for surf riding are identical to paddle surfboards but are made of epoxy and are designed to handle the loads and stresses. There are now "stick-on" footpads and footstraps that can be adhered to a standard board without inserts, removing the necessity to cut, drill and glass a board.
