Priority Rules PDF Print Email

Priority Rules are used when more than one rider rides at the same spot it is important for all riders to adhere to the "rules of the road" to help avoid accidents and unnecessary injury. The following rules are the IKO Priority Rules which have been taught to instructors all around the world for the last 6 years. Be responsible and learn the rules and especially the last rule.

  1. 1. When two riders converge in a collision course on opposite tacks, the rider going to starboard (kite on the right hand side of the wind window) has right of way. The rider on Port tack should change course and lower their kite to pass downwind of the starboard rider.
  2. 2. When overtaking, the overtaking rider must give priority to the slower kiter by passing by with a safe distance. The overtaking rider should assume the slower rider has not seen him/her and rider defensively.
  3. 3. The rider leaving the beach has right of way over the rider returning to the beach. The rider approaching the beach should change tacks and go around for one more run to allow the other kiter to clear the beach. Wind is usually gustiest at the beach and the water is the safest place.
  4. 4. If two riders approach, not on a collision course, the upwind rider shall have right of way over the starboard tack rider who is downwind. The Port rider shall raise their kite high enough to allow safe distance to pass and the starboard rider shall bear away a little and lower their kite to allow a safe passing.
  5. 5. When jumping you have no right of way. You forfeit priority as you leave the water regardless of tack you were or are on. Leave a clear distance of 50m downwind, and 30m upwind.
  6. 6. Kiters should give way to all other craft as we are the most agile and most confusing to other water users. Powered vessels should give way to sail, but often it is easier for us to change direction. Do not kite through a fleet of racing dinghy's or yachts, it's bad form.
  7. 7. When kite surfing, the rider on the wave has priority over the rider on the way out through the break. If you are on the way out through the surf, have courtesy and consideration for others who are wave riding. They often have less options than you do especially in big surf and are probably watching the wave and not you.
  8. 8. AVOID COLLISIONS AT ALL COST REGARDLESS OF RIGHT OF WAY!
