Deadman and Candle stick are two of the easiest and most joked about tricks in kite surfing due to their apparent easy nature. They are both similar tricks and have lead ins to other tricks such as the Heart attack and Flying Squirrel. A Candle stick is simply a big boost where the rider inverts and points their body straight upside down whilst looking down at the water.
To begin, it is good to have plenty of power. Follow the tip #1 Boosting bigger jumps to get some serious height. On the way up from the jump, sheet the bar in towards your body and at the same time press down with your fore arms which will push the bar down and against your thighs. If you haven't already, you should turn your kite into the wind for maximum hangtime. Throw your head back and arch your back whilst keeping your legs straight. The idea is to hit your lines with the rail of the board and keep your body very straight and inverted. To add a degree of difficulty, when inverted, look straight down at the water. This has the tendency of disorienting the rider making it more difficult to land. As you feel the apex of the jump, and start coming down, pull back on the bar to re-right yourself allowing your board and legs to swing back down again and prepare for landing. Steer the kite forward again and try to spot your landing. Bend your knees, point the board slightly down wind in the direction of travel and and ride away on landing.
The deadman is the same move only you need to be hooked into some method of holding the power of the kite when you let go. Some bars have a second harness loop for this. Other bars have powerloc, etc. If you have no means of maintaining power on you will need to be quick as when you let go of the bar you will descend rapidly from dumping power of letting go of the bar. Initiate the swing to change to inverted again by pushing the bar down against the thighs and swinging your legs up and throwing your upper body back. Remember to keep your body very straight. As you approach the apex of the jump, let go of the bar and dangle your arms downwards towards the water and look down at the water. Maintain this position for a second, then throwing your arms forwards and up, initiate the return to upright and grab the bar as quickly as possible to steer the kite forwards again. Land the jump as in the candle stick.
