Back Roll
The back roll is generally the first trick attempted by beginners once they master the splat! The back roll is performed by sending the kite back to initiate a small controlled jump, and throwing the body into a backwards rotation. It is important that you can jump with the kite without looking at it, and instead, jump more by “feel” or timing. Start off hooked in to the harness, with a medium forward speed and good controlled power. Your stance should be general riding posture at approximately 60 degrees to the water. By selecting a nice small piece of chop, it will make the move easier to initiate. Start turning the kite back with some back hand pressure as per a normal jump, time the wave with your lift off from the water, but just before you leave the water, start turning the board upwind off the wavelet and lean back onto your back foot, at the same time, turn your head back to look back over your front shoulder or under your front armpit, this will initiate the rotation of your body and will help you spot your landing before you complete your rotation. Where the head goes, the body will follow. Turn the kite forward again to soften the landing and give you power in the direction of travel at mid way through the jump. It is important to spot your landing so you can alter your rotation speed to adjust to the height and distance before you line up the landing. Rotation speed is altered by "tucking up" which increases rotation, or "laying out" or opening up to slow rotation. Bend your knees, absorb the landing and ride away smiling! Tip: Do not send the kite too far you don't want big air initially.
