Board Off
Board off tricks are becoming seen less and less on beaches around Oz, but that is only due to trend. Board offs are still fun and look good when executed well. The beauty of board offs is their variety. They can be as simple as removing the board and placing back on your feet for landing a jump or can be as complex as a 360 degree tail whip, indy rail to rail flip or even a board pass behind the back. It's up to you, practice makes perfect.
The board off is a move which needs a good sized jump and plenty of hangtime. If you wish to start practicing board offs it is best to adjust your footstraps so that you can kick your feet easily in and out of the straps. A handle on the board is still the easiest way to do board offs. You need to be powered and in control of your big jumps. Start off by moving your front hand close to the centre of the bar next to the trim line. Pull on the back hand and edge into a big jump. As you leave the water, keep the bar pressure on with your front hand and reach down for the board. Make sure you go for the board and get it off on the way up in the jump, if you grab the board at the apex of the jump it is already too late. Take the board off and carry out whatever variation of the move you were planning, perhaps the simplest is just taking the board off and straightening your body into a superman. You should be preparing tom put the board back on as you just start your descent. It is easiest to put both feet back in at the same time. Don't worry too much about a super snug fit, just get your feet on in time for touchdown, snug them in later. Throughout the jump, the pressure you keep on the bar with your front hand should be enough to give you the hangtime and also a slow redirection of the kite forward for landing. As you approach the water, bend your knees and land.
Most common problem is not getting the board off on the way up and not keeping enough pressure on the bar to sustain the hangtime required. Also a good idea to practice the board on moves on the sand to get used to putting your feet in the straps quickly. Practice makes perfect!
