Crashing in surf
Crashing in the surf can be really scary as you can easily be picked up and tumbled by the set waves losing your bearings and breath. The first rule of surf is get a good breath and never to panic! Just before you hit the water take a quick glance at the kite to determine which way it is heading and where it is in the wind window. Your sole concern should be to keep tension in the lines to keep the kite flying. This is most easily achieved by flying it towards the ocean away from the beach or by looping the kite. Don’t worry about your board, you can body drag back to the beach between the set waves to get your board as it will most certainly be caught by the white water and get sent into the shoreline downwind. Flying your kite towards the horizon will pull you through waves and out the other side even in massive surf, this is the rule for survival. Never turn your kite towards the beach if you are about to be caught by a wave as it will push you towards and under the kite allowing the lines to go slack and allowing the kite to luff and fall into the surf. Never turn your back on the waves as you can be caught out by waves that catch you off guard. If this happens and your kite does go down in the surf, unhook and throw the bar but keep your leash on. This de-powers the kite and allows it to wash up onto the beach where you can sort out the lines later. Staying hooked in and holding the bar will allow the waves to smash into a rigid kite canopy and can lead to your kite being smashed and torn. Many kites have been almost completely destroyed in surf!
