Load and Pop
Loaded tricks or tricks with “pop” are generally with the kite low in the window (between 9.30 and 10.30 o’clock). These tricks don’t use the kite to lift us off the water by sending it backwards. They rely on speed, board flex, and loading the lines to “spring” us into the roll or flip. These tricks can be accomplished and made look stylish either hooked in or unhooked from the bar. A board with some tail flex can be great for this type of trick. Strangely enough, these tricks have the least consequence when learning, compared to kite assisted “boosting” tricks. The reason is that if you fail to complete the maneuver and you haven’t moved the kite, you will simply splash into the water and your kite will be in neutral or fall harmlessly into the water in the neutral side of the wind window. No consequence! It is easiest to learn hooked in to begin with, and then progress to unhooked. The key is speed and smooth water when learning. Follow the few simple points to try loaded tricks.

Firstly, build speed and have smooth water so you can concentrate on the loading. Secondly when you are ready, transfer all of your weight onto the back foot to try and stop the board from planing. If you do this correctly, the board will almost stop and spring off the tail. At this point, use your forward momentum to throw your self into a tucked roll over the front of the board. More lift from the kite can be used if you turn the board upwind as you stall it and throw your weight upwind and forward. Like vaulting off a spring board or mini tramp. This loads the kite lines and produces a minor bungee effect, which should give you enough height to clear the water during your flip or roll. Be careful not to steer the kite upward during this trick as it spoils the move and makes the landing more difficult. Midway through the trick, keeping tucked, spot your landing and prepare for touchdown by extending your legs. Extending out of the trick also slows your body’s rotation and prepares you for landing. Remember keep the knees bent for landing.
