Kite Loop Kiteloops and Kite Downturn jumps are probably the most fun things you can do with your clothes on. My biggest thrills and most trepidation still come from big kiteloops when well powered on short lines, nothing gets the juices pumping like a gnarly kiteloop. They are also responsible for many knee reco's and broken boards, but worth it I reckon. Kite loops and downturn jumps take little skill, just huge plums to pull the trigger and follow it through. There are two kinds of Kite loop maneuvers - Kiteloops proper, and kite down turn jumps, the latter being a bit easier. A proper kiteloop in my humble opinion, should be where you are as high or higher than the kite as it comes through the bottom of its arc closest to the water. You always land hard and you always land really fast. These are the most fun but the most punishing. To execute a good kiteloop, it is better on shorter lines to allow the kite to be closer to the water allowing you to get as high or higher than the kite during it's loop. Start by riding at a comfortable pace with the kite at 45 degrees from the water (no higher) and pick a nice steep bit of chop or a wave, hit this powered and jump using only the waves kicker effect, as you leave the water, crank in full power and full back hand pressure to initiate the loop. You will have a second of going up and then a violent pull downwind as the loop starts proper, KEEP THE BACK HAND PRESSURE ON ALL THE WAY! DO NOT BAIL OUT! Bailing through fear is the worse thing you can do as it will cause you and the kite to crash under full power and it will hurt .... a lot! As the kite comes around through the bottom of the loop, spot your landing and brace for a hard and fast impact. You must bend your knees. If you come in too fast, land the board flat but with your legs out in front of you, allowing it to skip out forwards from underneath you which will allow you to butt check the landing washing off speed and taking the sting out of the impact. The key is COMMITMENT. Make the decision and then follow it through, or don't make it and forget about it. Warning: This jump has high fun and also high casualty rate. Be careful! * Kite down turn jumps are a good way to work up to Kiteloops. A kite down turn jump is where the kite is looped whilst the rider is in the air for the entire loop, but the kite loops in the upper half of the wind window thus being a lot less violent and giving reasonable lift from the kite for landing. You still land faster than a normal jump, but with more lift and not as hard and fast as a normal kiteloop. Start off by pulling a big jump from say 11 o'clock, instead of bringing your kite back into the wind at 12 o'clock, allow it to hesitate a half second at say 1 o'clock, then when you are near the apex of the jump, crank on the back hand and hold it all the way through the loop. As the kite comes into the lower part of the loop, you get a strong down wind pull whilst still high off the water and you will start dropping rapidly, however, and here's the main difference, as the kite comes out of the loop back towards the Zenith, lift returns and it cushions your landing to some extent. This is the safest method. As you get more comfortable, send the kite from lower and lower in the wind window until you are ready to Kiteloop, from below 45 degrees. Again, have fun, and be committed, they only hurt bad if you bail half way through.
