Freeride bliss
Freeride bliss
Australian Kiteboarding never rests in our search to offer better service and more flexible options to make getting into kiteboarding easier than ever before.  This year we are changing our lesson format to give you a better choice to suit your needs, whether you are just experimenting with the idea of kitesurfing and want to have a taste test by way of an Intro lesson, or taking a few lessons to decide if it is a sport you will follow on with, or maybe whether you are a committed learner wanting to buy gear and really get into it, we have a program that will suit you.

After some experimentation with longer duration lessons we are changing back to the 2hr lesson format of previous years as some customers found the additional hour a "bit of a stretch".

We want you to become independent, safe and confident enough to make correct judgements on weather and location, to be able to handle a range of conditions and to be confident in the flying without the need to rely on others, we focus more on making you able to handle any situation on your own so you can self learn the remaining parts of the lesson in safety with skill and good decisions.  Our students are the best prepared beginners in Perth.

Check out our options for learning :-

Introducory Lesson - 1hr

Single Lessons - 1 on 1 - 2hrs

Full Course - 1 on 1 - 6hrs

Advanced Lessons - 1 on 1 - 1hr

Our Teaching Location

Upwind Beach
Upwind Beach
The beaches of Pinnaroo Point where we teach are perfect for clean sea breezes as there are no upwind obstacles to disturb the wind and the point itself is a prominent part of the landscape reaching out into the Ocean.  This allows us to work in slightly varying wind directions and usually means the wind at our beach is a couple of knots stronger than anywhere else in Perth.

The beach is wide and offers plenty of beach space upwind and downwind with no dangerous obstacles making it perfect for safe lessons. The sand is clean and soft and there is no surf which makes for nice safe protected water. We believe it is the ultimate learning beach in Perth.

What you need to supply

What you need to supply is a towel and a dry change of clothes if your lesson involves water time (Lessons 1 & 2), a pair of Sunglasses, perhaps a hat for sun protection and some water. If you are going in the water, bring a pair of board shorts and rash vest or a wetsuit if you have one (don't worry if you don't have one, a T-shirt will suffice or we sell top quality spring and steamers as well as rashies and neo tops in our shop right on the beach alongside of the learning centre). If you are redeeming a gift certificate or setup lesson voucher, you must bring the voucher or certificate along to take advantage of the service.  No voucher - NO FUN!

Please note that at the start of the season and towards the end, the water and wind can be cold, depending on the day.  We usually recommend a wetsuit or thermal rashie if you are going in the water.  We do not supply these items as part of the lesson, although we can offer to sell you either a new wetsuit or Thermal Rashie if you don't have your own.

If you bring your wallet and phone etc with you, we strongly suggest you bring it to the beach with you and allow us to lock it up in our secure safe within the truck for safe keeping for you as break ins on cars are not uncommon especially mid week.

What we will supply

Australian Kiteboarding School supply to all our customers, latest model quality kites (Leading Edge Inflatable, Supported Leading Edge and Trainer Foils), latest model school boards, control bars and lines fitted with latest design safety release systems, PFD life vests, Latest Headzone radio coaching helmets, Pat Love waist harnesses, sunscreen, first aid, back up rescue boat and all learning tools. We also issue the IKO Kiteboarder Card as part of our standard lessons once you complete your training with us.

The IKO Kiteboarder Card

IKO Kiteboarder Card
IKO Kiteboarder Card
The IKO Kiteboarder card is an integral part of the lesson for every student. The back of the card, when completed, gives information of weather conditions, equipment used, school and instructor ID numbers, as well as marking the progress of each student to show level attained and status. ALL IKO Centres and instructors MUST issue the IKO Kiteboarder Card to conform with IKO standards after your lesson. If you are not receiving your kiteboarder card, you probably haven't been instructed by a legitimate or up-to-date IKO Instructor.

The card also is the key to gaining IKO kiteboarder global insurance and for gear rental in centers that offer rental, as well as discounts at participating stores and partners of IKO. No card, no insurance!   Make sure you get your card at the end of your lessons.

Intro Lesson - 1hr - $60 PDF Print E-mail

Ed and Young Kiter Zac
AKS offer the intro lesson for customers who are keen to have a bit of a taste of power kiting before committing to a course of lessons.  This lesson is also highly recommended if you are keen to get into the sport but have had no prior kite flying experience.  Intro lessons are the perfect introduction to the exciting world of water and land power kiting.  You may choose to learn kite mountain boarding or kite surfing from this lesson.

The Intro lesson is exactly what it sounds like, an introduction to the worlds fastest growing and most exciting water sport, kiteboarding.  You get to see what it is like to fly a powered trainer kite under the instruction and guidance of one of our trained AKS instructors.

Image
Ozone Imp Trainer
The lesson goes for 1 hour and is conducted in a group of up to 3 others.  The kites will be the latest Ozone Imp III, trainer foil kites of sizes to suit the prevailing wind strength.  You will learn about safety and release systems, how to rig and launch a trainer foil kite, kite control and steering, correct flying technique, understanding the wind window, how to generate and control power, relaunching after a crash, and how to land the kite safely.

Image
Flying a Trainer is fun!
The cost of this lesson will be deducted from the purchase price of an Ozone trainer kite should you decide to buy one at the end of your lesson to continue your practice.  Trainer kites are the best way to maximize the value you get from your full lessons.  The more time you spend flying trainer kites, the easier learning the sport is and the faster you will advance through your formal lessons on full size power kites.  This will ultimately save you money!

With 10-15 hours flying, trainers give you a complete understanding of the wind window and also build intuitive control and muscle memory of how to fly a kite in adverse as well as predictable conditions.  This experience directly translates to the larger Leading Edge Inflateable power kites we use to ride on the water and also on the large land foil kites used on land on buggys and mountain boards.

At just $60 now you have no excuse to not give kiteboarding a go!

Learning the basics of control
Lesson 1 (Basic Beginner) - 2hrs

This is the basics of kite control and handling and is of course, 'one-on-one' with your own personal instructor flying the "real deal".   You will be flying a latest model, full size power kite throughout the duration of the lessons.  These lessons are  two hours durations each to allow students to progress at a steady pace and get great value from their instructor.  It's the perfect balance between knowledge cramming and physical ability.

Lessons are almost entirely "Hands on" and are conducted with a 1:1 student to instructor ratio. This lesson can also be purchased as a Gift Certificate.

What you will learn

In the first lesson you go over, wind effects, equipment terminology, and location selection criteria.  Then it's on to equipment setup, basic aerodynamics, wind window theory, safety system use and reset, launching and landing both assisted and solo, flying the kite with the de-power loop (true 4-line de-power), water re-launching a crashed kite from the water, self rescue (theoretical and also practical), twisting and untwisting the lines whilst flying, body dragging down wind hooked into the harness using the power of the kite in a safe water environment.

At the end of this lesson, you are free to buy your own equipment and enter our Unlimited Free Lesson Plan for the remainder of your training, or buy your own gear and have the next one on one lesson for free.

Level 2 Lesson (Intermediate beginner) - 2hrs

The next step picks up where the first lesson finished and gets you straight in the water.  It starts with additional body drag techniques such as Upwind body dragging (this is the skill to teach you to retrieve the board after a crash without a board leash), we incorporate one hand control at this point, releasing the bar in the water then retrieving the bar and re-launching from the water. We include a "practical self rescue scenario" and finally we set you up on a board and teach the theory of water start.  We then progress to the practical water start on the board, diving the kite to enable getting on your feet and controlling speed and direction on the board, using the kite and good edging technique for control.

After having completed this lesson you should be skilled enough to rent equipment off us prior to taking the 3rd and final lesson.  You may also purchase your own equipment to practice on, prior to taking the final lesson.  This is not essential, but it will help you if you have some practice.

10% Theory, 50% land flying, 40% water flying.  100% Hands on!

Level 3 Lesson (Independent Beginner) - 2hrs

This final level covers the remaining topics to make you a totally independent rider.

What you will learn

If necessary, we re-cover water starting from the previous lesson, then move quickly on to staying on your feet, dealing with the excess power/speed conflict, riding upwind, holding a good edge on the board, controlling direction and basic jumps. We also cover changing direction, or transitions, more advanced aerodynamics and apparent wind. We also cover Priority Rules (the rules of the road) and selecting the right gear for you.

After having completed this lesson you should be competent and know what to do in the event of something going wrong. You should be able to choose a spot, rig, launch and ride away from the beach and ride back safely. We would be happy to offer you insurance at this point to cover you for personal accident and public liability. You will have completed the three levels of iko training in three intense lessons and you will receive your completed iko Kiteboarder Card enabling you to purchase insurance and hire gear from us or other overseas centres should you wish.

We would be happy to make a recommendation and hand you over to our dedicated retail manager to discuss your equipment requirements to ensure you get a good deal on the right gear for you.  If you purchase gear from us as a package, you will be entitled to a special package rate.  Please ask your instructor or our retail manager for details after your lessons.

AKS FREE Lessons

ImageAustralian Kiteboarding School have always been keen to make getting into the sport cheaper and easier.  The AKS FREE Lessons plan is an option which offers the choice to purchase gear at retail prices and not a dollar more, from our shop up front before you start lessons.  This will entitle you to a FREE Riders Package of lessons.  The Riders package is three, one-on-one, 2hr lessons with one of our IKO qualified instructors.  Thats a saving of up to $660 straight up!

This option will not be for everyone of course.  Some people will not be happy to lay down the money without having a go at least.  For these people, we will allow you to enter the free lessons program after your first paid lesson but you will receive the next two lessons for FREE.  This is still a great deal and you'll be saving $440 from the cost of the gear and still get free one-on-one lessons with our highly trained staff.

You get a brand new top quality kite, a new quality board, new harness and board bag and then three one-on-one IKO standard, FREE Lessons.

What's the catch?  There isn't really a catch other than the program is restricted to the better quality gear.  In other words you can't buy the cheapest thing off the rack, which isn't really an issue because almost no one chooses the cheapest models anyway.

Who says "You can't get something for nothing these days?"  Tell 'em to talk to us!

Talk to us at the beach or on the phone about the gear available through the FREE Lesson program
